Once that is done, save up for the Split Consciousness ability, and use it as soon as you can; once you use it, the node you placed will become another Blob Core, controlled by another Overmind with a different chemical to yours.
Once that is done, you should be able to defend against the crew reasonably well. Just keep producing nodes with resource blobs near them and you'll do fine.
