Guide to Managing Your Staff

As a Head of Staff, you will be tasked with managing the staff members of your assigned department. This may seem overwhelming at first, but keep a level head and follow this guide to ensure a basic understanding of staff management.

Managing The Workforce

When you begin your shift as a head of staff, your first priority should be to learn who your employees will be. If you are the captain, you should radio in on the command frequency and know who your underlings are. If you are a department head, learn who your employees are, and ask/order them to do something useful (Such as establishing the singularity, setting up cryogenics, or doing xenobiology).

Unruly Employee

If an employee is not doing what they're told, or breaking a rule, law, or conduct, your responsibility as a head of staff is to punish them accordingly. You have many tools to assist you (Especially as the Head of Security) such as the collapsible baton, and the identification computer. The collapsible baton is arguably the most powerful melee stun tool, as it is not electrical (Thus requiring no recharging), and stuns for a brief amount of time (Enough to handcuff a person).

For an employee who commit an offense that wasn't necessarily serious, a warning may be enough of a punishment. For an employee who commit a major offense, demotion and/or brig time may be required. To demote an employee, take their ID and use your identification computer to un-assign them.

Your Co-Workers Care For You

It is equally important to maintain contact with your co-workers, being your fellow heads of staff, and your boss the captain. They will realize you've been awfully quiet should you end up in a maintenance tunnel with an alarmingly high level of red goo around you. Always remember to enable your suit sensors.

Your Department, Your Rules

As a department head, you have a right to determine who enters your department as an employee. The Head of Personal is required to inquire whether you wish for a person to be assigned to your department, or they may find you to stamp an approval paper. You should always be alert to these requests, as you may be able to stop a known troublemaker from entering your department, or you may miss the chance to allow a skilled worker in.

Emergency Situation

Generally, you'll encounter an emergency situation aboard the scientific station of SS13. If you're not the Head of Security, Captain, or Head of Personal, you should continue trying to manage your staff to keep the station in working condition. Do not leave your post unless ordered to by the captain, head of security, or the traitor chasing you with an e-sword.

If you are unlucky enough to be the Captain, make sure your heads of staff are alive, and have them continue doing what they do best. The Head of Security and the Head of Personal should always maintain contact with the captain, and should coordinate as a trio to re-establish order.

Traitor Head

Months, years, or decades of under-cover operation has finally produced fruit. You are a syndicate operative, working aboard SS13 as a very influential staff member. As a syndicate, you can forget about actually managing your department if you wish. Your staff will most likely unduly follow most of your orders, and may even be able to assist you in your mission. However, take caution, the captain and head of security will take no hesitation to perma-brig you or even execute you if they find out, and your head of staff status can't save you.

Final Notes

Managing your staff as an understanding, kind and compassionate head may gain favour, but don't let them walk over you. Make sure you establish that you are a head of staff and not afraid to exercise your power to keep the station in tip-top shape.

Being a rude, over-bearing head of staff is a good way to get lynched during a cultist, revolutionist, or any other round where the staff can retaliate.
