The minerals on Lavaland have two different levels of hardness. Level 1 minerals are light grey, and can be broken in 1 hit. Insert your ID, and empty the box next to the machine to offload your ores and have them instantly processed into sheets. You gain points for doing this, so be sure to claim them and then retrieve your ID. Now buy new gear if you want, take your crate and it's back to the mines!
